(Persoft Inc's SmarTerm 420 for Windows) (Software Review ) (Lab Notes) (Brief Article) by Blakeley, Michael Full Text Persoft SmarTerm is fluent in emulation, languages Companies on both sides of the Atlantic will welcome the new, multilingual Version 4.0 of Persoft Inc.'s SmartTerm 420 for Windows. PC Week Labs recommends SmarTerm for both its solid terminal emulation and smooth support of English, French, German, and Spanish users. Although this version of SmarTerm, released last month for $395, does not support Asian languages, its menus, on-line help, and some documentation are available in English, French, German, and Spanish (see photo, above right), which should make offices in the Americas and Europe easier to support. During testing, Persoft's installation process guided us through selecting a language and successfully perceived that we wanted to use Winsock as our primary communications. SmarTerm also provides solid VT420 emulation. The auto-scaling fonts were especially useful, allowing us to resize the terminal window and the font in one motion. SmarTerm can connect over TCP/IP connections, Digital Equipment Corp.'s Local Area Transport, and traditional COM ports. SmarTerm also supports third-party synchronous connections such as VINES, PathWorks, and NCSI/NASI, as well as Winsock TCP/IP connections. PC Week Labs tested serial and TCP/IP connections. If Persoft's included TCP/IP stack is used, an FTP (File Transfer Protocol) server and a ping utility are also available. The TCP/IP stack is a Winsock-compliant dynamic link library that requires 9K bytes of conventional memory. SmarTerm also supports non-Winsock TCP/IP stacks from Beame & Whiteside Software Inc., SunSoft Inc., and others, but additional configuration is sometimes necessary. Also included is a Windows-based FTP client. We were impressed by the client's user interface, which included drag-and-drop file transfer and auto-switching between binary and text modes. The FTP client application shared its session list with SmarTerm and included a viewer for local or remote files.
