Chip boosts servers. (Systech Corp's Etherplex Unix
Communications Coprocessor EISA) (PC Week Netweek) (Brief
Article)

Full Text
To boost user response for CPU-intensive processes, Systech Corp. has
begun shipping an EISA version of its Etherplex Unix Communications
Coprocessor.

The Etherplex product attempts to improve network response time by
off-loading the telnet daemon, TCP/IP stack, and virtual terminal
management from the Unix host CPU. The product is available for The
Santa Cruz Operation Inc.'s Open Server and Novell Inc.'s UnixWare.

A 2M-byte version, priced at $3,995, will allow 256 additional users to
log in; an 8M-byte Etherplex board, costing $5,995, will support 2,048
users.

Installed, the Etherplex board is transparent to the Unix host; client
machines see only the host.

While Systech claims a 300 percent improvement in terminal I/O
throughput with the Etherplex, potential buyers should carefully
consider whether their Unix system is facing a bottleneck caused by
terminal I/O or by other factors.

The Etherplex should improve user response times for CPU-intensive
processes -- however, disk-intensive processes remain unaccelerated.
Systech, of San Diego, can be contacted at (619) 453-8970.
